At the Escape Gastro Bar one of the ways we stand out is through our molecular cocktail menu. However this is not a term every customer is aware from when they walk through our doors. So just what is a molecular cocktail and how does it enhance the modern drinking experience?

Molecular mixology is in essence a way of mixing cocktails in such a way that you maximise their flavour to provide a fuller, more enriched drinking experience. It’s a practice that is used on many modern cocktail menus and has received great acclaim from those who prove themselves experts in the industry.

It is a practice that rose to prominence in the latter half of the twentieth century. This is the time when the world changed; increasingly rapid advancements in technology meant that many industries which had before been governed by certain rules had the game changed on them.

Take the cocktail industry for example. It is an industry that rose in the flapper era of the 1920’s and the prohibition era of the 1930’s. These were times where the technology required to carefully craft cocktails was woefully absent. Therefore it all went by taste.

However as the world changed so did the cocktail industry. We went from shaken or stirred to more advanced practices, as items such as blow torches, measures and even vacuum sealers came into play, inventing the practice of molecular mixology.

Many cocktail experts also say that the practice of molecular mixology begun with the layering of cocktails. Either way, it seems obvious that this practice is one based around technology than can enhance the drinking experience. They use techniques designed to enhance flavour.

This is what you ultimately get with the molecular cocktail; enhanced flavour. The old flavour by taste method has gone and in its place we use modern equipment to calculate and mix the ingredients in such a way that they mix perfecting for your palette.

This is why the molecular cocktail is more than anything else a next step in an evolution of the industry. Cocktails have always been about finding the right blend to make the cocktail shine and molecular mixology goes one step further in achieving that ultimate goal.
