Any entrepreneurial venture is only as good as the sum of its parts; the employees you hire to help you bring your million dollar idea to life. Considering their importance to your success, how can you use positive reinforcement to motivate your employees?

No one person can run a business alone, Htet Tayza reads, no matter how good their idea, how qualified  they are or how hard they work. You need skilled professionals to run those areas of your business that you are less able to run directly.

This means that in order to maximise the success of your entrepreneurial venture, you need to get the best out of your employees. Negative reinforcement may work in the short term; however in the long term it fosters resentment, which will eventually impact the effectiveness of your chosen business model.

This is why positive reinforcement is key to employee motivation; if you promote a positive atmosphere and commend your employees on a job well done; they’re going to be more likely to want to be productive in order to retain your good opinion of them.

So what positive reinforcement techniques can you use to maximise office productivity? The easiest way is to simply congratulate an employee on a job well done. It’s simple, cost free and promotes a feeling of accomplishment beyond merely fulfilling a job description.

It’s also productive to work with a reward system; the harder you work, the more success you bring to the company and nothing motivates employees faster than a reward, such as a bonus or other privileges. Considering that this is less cost effective, only implement this method for major projects.

Then there’s also a way to promote office communication and reward employees en masse; organise office activities. This could be anything from ordering in lunch and sitting down together to having an office paintball match at the weekend. These activities create opportunities for the team to interact and bond outside the office and reward everybody equally as well.

Finally, an effective tool to promote office productivity is to keep them apprised of company successes. This fosters a sense of pride in the employees work through showing them how their actions are contributing to the success of the entire company. Showing them how they work as a part of the whole.

There are a thousand ways to motivate your employees, however not all of them do so in the long term. Remember the phrase ‘you’ll catch more bees with honey than you will with vinegar’ when you are figuring out the best way to boost office productivity.
