Last week the BBC featured an editorial chronicling the steps businessman Chris Dawson took to a billionaire, and this week on the Htet Tayza blog, I want to use this example to show you how you can proceed as an entrepreneur with nothing but a dream.
The Ultimate Entrepreneur: Chris Dawson
Chris Dawson is the ultimate example of the resourceful businessman who used every tool at his disposal to become a colossal success. A name on the Sunday Times Rich List, he’s worth a staggering £1.28 billion to date, and that number keeps on rising.
Head of The Range Homewear stores, Dawson comes from humble beginnings and worked his way to the top on a wing and a prayer, starting out as a market trader in the UK town of Plymouth. So how did he get from market trader to market dominator?
Stairway to Heaven: Chris Dawson’s Path to the Sunday Times Rich List
Dawson started young, as he embraced the opportunity to set up a jumble stall whilst still in junior school. Not having much money, he invested it in the leftovers from the other sellers, which he proceeded to clean up and flog for a pretty penny
Simultaneously whilst at school, he got into the scrap metal game, taking the discarded metals from school metal classes and trading them on to a scrap dealer. He then became one himself at the age of 15, when he dropped out of school without a single qualification to his name.
From there he traded anything he could, often taking to the streets to sell his wares, looking for any opportunity he could to generate profit. He and a friend eventually used this experience to get into the lucrative cash and carry business.
From there, the sky was the limit. He opened his first shops, focused on providing discount outlets and built up his empire to the point where he earned himself the title billionaire.
Chris Dawson: An Example to Entrepreneurs Everywhere
There are many things you can learn from the story of Chris Dawson, but what I want you to take from this article is that there are opportunities everywhere. The effective entrepreneur takes their initial idea and moulds it to best fit what their target consumer group is looking for at the time. That is how you become a billionaire!
